More than one million Rotary members have volunteered their time and resources to help end polio. This month, for the first time, a group of Rotary staff members will join volunteers and health workers in the field and see our polio eradication program in action. Follow the five participants as they travel to India to support subnational Immunization Days, expected to reach up to 172 million children across the country.

In 1916, New York City experienced a devastating outbreak of polio— the first major outbreak of the disease in the United States. One hundred years later, the world is a different place in fighting this disease. Cases have been reduced by 99 percent over the last 25 years and polio has been stopped in all but three countries.

Rotary was recognized on 17 September on public television’s fifth annual American Graduate Day program for its work with San Diego-based Monarch School, a K-12 school for homeless youth. The Rotary Club of San Diego, California, USA, was applauded for its work mentoring Monarch’s students, keeping them on track to graduate, and helping the school to continue thriving during tough economic times.

Nations around the world will observe the International Day of Peace on 21 September, a date designated by the United Nations in 2001 as «a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.»
Rotary’s commitment to building peace and resolving conflict is rooted in the Rotary Peace Centers program, formed in 2002. Each year, the program prepares up to 100 fellows to work for peace through a two-year master’s degree program or a three-month professional certificate program at university partners worldwide.

On a drive along the N2 Freeway in Cape Town, South Africa, travelers speed past endless clusters of corrugated metal shacks that fill the sandy Cape Flats area between the airport and iconic Table Mountain.

As a criminal prosecutor and assistant district attorney, John Warren has seen much more than his share of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse cases. Now, by founding the nonprofit Men of Action, he hopes to help prevent family and sexual violence by redefining manhood. Dressed in a black burqa under a blazing sun with temperatures topping 100 degrees, Hina is going from house to house, knocking on doors. Plastered against the walls of the mud-brick homes, neat rows of hand-patted dung cakes dry in the sun to be used for cooking fuel. Open sewers stagnate beside the uneven dirt roads where children play.
At each home, Hina gives drops of the polio vaccine to any children age five and under and records the doses in her log and with chalk outside the home.

On 24 October, World Polio Day, Rotary will bring together partners from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative for an update on our fight to end polio. As host and moderator of the event, our organization plays a key role in amplifying one of the most important public health concerns in modern history.
When we first took it up as an organizational cause over three decades ago, polio affected 350,000 children every year, mostly in lower-income countries where poor sanitation and limited access to clean water facilitate the spread of the virus.

Nigeria’s health minister, Isaac Adewole, said on Friday that his government is determined to rid the country of polio again. New cases recently landed Nigeria back on the list of countries where the disease is endemic.
Adewole met with Rotary leaders at Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, to discuss Nigeria’s recent efforts to stem the outbreak.
